I worked with Betty Shain and was with her when she was notified of Phillip's death, it took her to her knees.  I remember thinking how will she ever get though this, there is nothing worse than the loss of a beloved son.  He was a great guy and we lost him to soon.

Phil was a quiet and nice guy.  Always seemed to be even tempered and laid back.  If memory serves me Phil died on Rt. 130 near the railroad tracks you cross going to Valpo.  I believe Carla Thompson also died in that accident.

There is a correction to my story of Phil.  It was Brenda Thompson, sister to Frank and Carla, that was in the accident with Phill that took their lives..  At last report Carla is still alive and well and living in theis general area.

Since I am back on this page I will tell one more story of Phil.  He went to church on the corner of State St. and 10th St.  It was maybe Church of God or 1st Assembly of God or something like that.  They were having a big evangelistic week long evening meetings with an emphasis on inviting visitors and Phil's mom was insistent that he invite someone.  This was prob about 9th grade or so.  Phil and I were not close buddies but we were friends.  I take pride in Phil using me to satisfy his mother's wish without embarrassing himself in front of his closest friends.  The bonus was my mother was also pleased that I had a friend who would invite me to church.  Almost alway at that age when I would leave the house my mother would usher my departure with a long list of warnings and don't do -s.  The only warning given that night was don't come home speaking in tongues.  I should have let one slip out after that but I missed that opportunity.

I met Phil in the 4th grade. We were friends throughout school. I thought Phil was an alright guy.

yes Bob.  He was a good guy.  I met you because of Evergreen Church. I remember you and Danny and your mom and dad.  What I remember of your dad was that he worked on cars and maybe raced some cars?  I seem to recall taking some swimming lessons at the Gary YMCA about the same time you did.  We rode a bus from the Hobart Y to the Gary Y.  Some classmates I remember from those lessons were Aaron Williams, Linda Wells, you, Danny Cole after his arm had been amputated, and there were probably other classmates I missed.  Best wishes Bob.
